Audi First to Test Autonomous Vehicles in NY State

It seems that just about every tech company and auto manufacturer out there is trying to get into the autonomous driving business, but not every business is meeting with the same success as Audi.

Alongside the Society of Automobile Engineers, Audi intends to begin testing Level 3 automated vehicles in Albany, New York this month. Audi is the first manufacturer to gain approval from the State Police and DMV to do so, and their test vehicle has already safely driven thousands of miles on stretches of highway across other areas of the U.S.

Audi currently uses Level 2 automation features such as intelligent cruise control, lane change assistance, and automatic emergency braking. Level 3 allows vehicles to take total control under specific circumstances, such as highway driving, and is a step below Level 4, in which the vehicle can take total control in most circumstances.

“We have been leading the way in the development of piloted driving technology for more than a decade now, and testing in real-world environments is a key step in our pursuit of safer roads,’’ said Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America. “We applaud Governor Cuomo for his leadership and stand ready to assist in defining how this future will unfold in the Empire State now and for years to come.”

Although Level 3 cars may not be ready for consumers yet, we know you will be soundly impressed by the safety technology found in today’s Audi vehicles. Step into our showroom in Hoffman Estates, IL to get a look at the incredible models we have for sale. Don’t forget to schedule a test drive!
